Introduction

SECTION 1 (9.00-10.30)
Practical Pile Foundation Design: Guides & checklists for scope of design.
Guidelines for Planning, evaluation & interpretation of SI for pile foundation design.
Checklists for what can go wrong in design & construction of pile foundation.
Checklist for pile foundation design report preparation.
SECTION 2 (11.00-13.00)
Case study 1: Project briefs related to site conditions, loadings and Clients requirements for a mixed commercial housing project consisting of 2 blocks of high-rise RC buildings, several blocks of 3-sotrey shop lots, several blocks of 2-storey residential houses, retaining walls & a bridge will be given. Participants are advised to bring their own Notebook/programmable calculator. Software to estimate pile axial load capacity will be given.
The participants in groups of 2 or 3 are required:
1. To plan necessary scope of SI for the project
2. A SI report will be subsequently given and the participants are required to select suitable pile systems for the buildings, walls and the bridge. Compare the pros and cons for each feasible system selected. Give basis of selection and justifications. Recommend the most appropriate system for implementation.
3. To recommend design loads for each pile system recommended based on estimation of geotechnical pile axial capacity, lateral pile capacity, negative friction, settlement plus structural capacity, etc. Typical catalogue of precast RC & spun piles will be given for participant to estimate structural pile capacity.
4. Recommendation of piling systems shall also include pile installation method and necessary precautions against possible excessive installation/driving stresses and potential pile structural integrity problems. List what can go wrong at site (based on SI report & site conditions) and necessary precautions/mitigations during the installation.
5. Propose necessary and appropriate scope of design validation and QC tests/measurements/observations/inspections to ensure the proposed pile systems recommended have adequate design details for successful implementation.

Case study 2: as case study 1, but in soft ground.
SECTION 4 (15.45-17.00)
Case study 3: Several maintained load test/PDA results including one instrumented bored pile load test result for driven RC piles, bored piles and microples will be given for the participants to evaluate, to interpret and assess/recommend whether the results are technically acceptable or otherwise.

SECTION 2 (11.00-13.00)
Case study 1: Project briefs related to site conditions/site contour plan, loadings and Clients requirements for a mixed commercial housing project consisting of 2 blocks of high-rise RC buildings, several blocks of 3-sotrey shoplots, several blocks of 2-storey residential houses, retaining walls & a bridge will be given. The project site geology is limestone formation & the site terrain is generally flat with few localized ponds. Site plan with necessary details will be given.
The participants in groups of 2 or 3 are required:
1. To plan necessary scope of SI for the project (numbers/types/methods of SI, their locations & necessary criteria or instruction notes to SI contractors, etc). Scope of SI shall be adequate for the designs of building foundations, walls, and bridge required. Requirements for quality supervision to ensure SI results are reliable shall be specified.
2. Based on information given, determine the potential geotechnical design & construction problems/issues and the necessary design parameters for foundation design, wall design & bridge (see site plan & project briefs)
3. Plan necessary sampling (types/frequency or intervals)
4. Plan necessary and appropriate insitu tests (types/frequency/intervals)
5. Plan necessary lab test scheme.
6. Prepare summary of SI planning report and BQ.
Sample of SI planning & summary of SI planning with BQ will be given as a guide.
SECTION 3 (14.00-15.30)
Case Study 2: as case study 1, but in rolling terrains with max fill of 12m and cut of 18m (see site plan).
SECTION 4 (15.45-17.00)
Case Study 3: A SI factual report for a road project in hilly terrains will be given to participants for preparation of SI interpretative report. The following issues shall be elaborated & discussed:
1. Scope of SI adequate for cut & fill slope design with respect to bore hole depth, spacing, type & frequency of insitu / lab tests? What are the required/recommended design parameters? Any supplementary SI (BH/samples/insitu/lab tests) required? Basis?
