Introduction
• Types of displacement piles: design standard/criteria, design principles/ concepts, applications & limitations.
• Geotechnical design: SI planning to ensure adequate & reliable subsoil information, selection of input design parameters from SI, methods of capacity & deformation estimation, scope of QC & design validation, etc.
• Structural design: minimum structural requirements for design capacity & permissible stresses. How to estimate stresses due to handling, installation & in service to ensure the stresses are within the permissible limits. Pile shoe & joint selection/design, etc.
• Common defective design & defective construction plus case histories of failures: Investigation & remediations proposals plus justifications.
• Practical case histories/studies of design & construction of driven/jacked-in RC & steel piles for various site & subsoil conditions including useful measures of design validation, mitigations against WCGW, etc.
Who are the speakers?
Qualification : • Bachelor Engineering (Hon) from University of Malaya.
• He was Vice President of IEM. (2004-2006)
Strength : • Geotechnical design for foundations, walls and slopes and as an independent geotechnical design checker.
• Published more than 50 technical papers on geotechnical and road engineering in various journals & bulletins.
Current job : • Director of E-Geo Consultant Sdn. Bhd.
Biodata : Ir. Neoh is Vice Precident of IEM (2004-2006), Chairman of Technical Committee for Geotechnics (TC5), Road Engineering Association Malaysia, (1997-2006) and also Chairman of IEM/CIDB/JPN organising committee.

He joined PWD Malaysia (74'-98') for 25 Years after graduated from UM (1974). He is currently (2000-2007) the Director of E-Geo Consultant Sdn. Bhd. who mainly involved in geotechnical design for foundations, walls and slopes and as an independent geotechnical design checker.

He has published more than 50 technical papers on geotechnical and road engineering in various journals & bulletins. He also presented in many local seminars and conferences.

SECTION 1: Overview of design & construction
• Pile classification (BS 8004). Types of displacement piles & installation methods for civil engineering projects: design standard/criteria, design principles/concepts, applications & limitations.
• Detail behavior of displacement in clay, sand and rock. Analysis models.
• Critical subsoil parameters & information required for displacement pile design: how to plan scope of SI to ensure adequate & reliable SI information & parameters are procured as per BEM Circular No. 4/2005 requirements. How to prepare SI interpretative report, etc.
• Geotechnical design: How to select appropriate parameters from SI results for analysis, design and estimation of pile capacity and deformation. How to design & prepare adequate scope of QC & design validation. Instrumentation, etc.
• Structural design: MS 1314 requirements for concrete piles & minimum structural requirements for pile body, joints and shoes. Steel and timber pile requirements. How to estimate permissible and installation stresses for precast RC piles, prestressed concrete piles, steel piles and timber piles, etc. QC requirements.

SECTION 2: Design Case histories of building foundations
• Design case histories for building foundations including cases in cut ground, filled ground, soft ground & difficult site/slope conditions, etc.
• Project brief, site conditions/constraints, SI results, SI interpretation
• Foundation type selection based on SI result, loading & site/environment, etc.
• Technical justifications (capacity & settlement estimation methods).
• Design validation scheme, instrumentation, etc

SECTION 3: Case histories of defective design & construction of displacement piles
• Defective design case histories of driven concrete piles with respective to MS 1314 requirements, BS 8004 requirements, inadequate and/or unreliable SI, etc. Proposals of remediations with necessary justifications, etc., are included.

SECTION 4: Underpinning design
• Detail case histories of underpinning design for distressed building foundations using displacement piles. Desk study to assess info available/required and determine causes and hypothesis of distress. Scope of SI and analysis required to verify the hypothesis. Recommendations & proposals of remediations including pile design plus necessary justifications and design validation, monitoring, etc.
