E030 Engineering Workshop on Design of Retaining Wall for Civil Engineering Projects 1 Day

BEM Approved 8 CPD Hours (Ref No: IEM09/PP/034/W) Normal Price RM 650.00
(If Register Online RM 500.00 Only before 10-10-2009)
Introduction
Original date is 10-10-2009 RESCHEDULED to the 24-10-2009 (Saturday) 0900 - 1700 due to the unforeseen reason
SECTION 1:
• Types of retaining walls and their classifications; their design concept and common causes for failures.
• Guidelines for Planning Scope of SI for retaining wall for Civil Engineering Projects
• Interpretation of SI results and selection of parameters for design.
• Guidelines for selection of suitable type of retaining wall for a project
• Applications & limitations of various types of retaining walls in various conditions.
• Important design validation at site for construction of retaining walls.
• Important construction details and notes that must be shown on construction drawings.
• Design & Construction checklists for various types of retaining walls.
• Typical case histories of retaining wall failures, scope of investigation and causes of failures will be illustrated and presented.
-Comprehensive technical notes and slides will be illustrated and distributed to participants for reference when doing the assignment/case studies

SECTION 2: Case study 1
• Project briefs related to site conditions/site contour plan, loadings and Client’s requirements for RC retaining walls of about 2m to 5m in soft ground and near a small stream for a mixed commercial housing project
• The participants in groups of 2 or 3 are required:
1. To plan necessary scope of SI for the project (numbers/types/methods of SI, their locations & necessary criteria or instruction notes to SI contractors, etc). Scope of SI shall be adequate for the designs of the retaining walls
2. Based on information given, determine the potential geotechnical design & construction problems/issues and the necessary design parameters for foundation design and wall (see site plan & project briefs)
3. SI results will be subsequently given and the participants are required to design the RC retaining wall including important construction sequence, construction controls and design validation scheme.
• Participants will be given adequate guides and advice during the course of the workshop. Sample of RC wall design scope and details, etc., be given as a guide.

SECTION 3: Case study 2
• as case study 1, but in rolling terrains with max required wall height of about 10m to 15m (see site plan).

SECTION 4: Case study 3
• Three common case studies of retaining wall failures/defects will be presented for discussion including background information, failures/defects description, SI results, design report/calculations, construction record. The participants are required to discuss and to determine the possible causes for the failures/defects and suggest possible remedies.
• Comments & advice for the case studies will be discussed.
