E023 Engineering Workshop on Planning Scope of SI for Civil Engineering Projects 1 Day

BEM Approved 8 CPD Points With Full Attendance Normal Price RM 650.00
(If Register Online RM 500.00 Only before 15-04-2009)
Introduction
SECTION 1 (9.00-10.30)
• Guidelines for Planning Scope of SI for Civil Engineering Projects
• Guidelines for selection of SI methods
• Applications & limitations of types/methods of Sampling, Insitu Testing & lab testing.
• Common malpractice at site by SI Contractors & how SI results can be affected or become unreliable.
• Interpretation of SI results.
• Guidelines for Preparation of SI Planning summary report & SI Interpretative Report

SECTION 2 (11.00-13.00)
• Case study 1: Project briefs related to site conditions/site contour plan, loadings and Client’s requirements for a mixed commercial housing project consisting of 2 blocks of high-rise RC buildings, several blocks of 3-sotrey shoplots, several blocks of 2-storey residential houses, retaining walls & a bridge will be given. The project site geology is limestone formation & the site terrain is generally flat with few localized ponds. Site plan with necessary details will be given.
• The participants in groups of 2 or 3 are required:
1. To plan necessary scope of SI for the project (numbers/types/methods of SI, their locations & necessary criteria or instruction notes to SI contractors, etc). Scope of SI shall be adequate for the designs of building foundations, walls, and bridge required. Requirements for quality supervision to ensure SI results are reliable shall be specified.
2. Based on information given, determine the potential geotechnical design & construction problems/issues and the necessary design parameters for foundation design, wall design & bridge (see site plan & project briefs)
3. Plan necessary sampling (types/frequency or intervals)
4. Plan necessary and appropriate insitu tests (types/frequency/intervals)
5. Plan necessary lab test scheme.
6. Prepare summary of SI planning report and BQ.
• Sample of SI planning & summary of SI planning with BQ will be given as a guide.

SECTION 3 (14.00-15.30)
• Case Study 2: as case study 1, but in rolling terrains with max fill of 12m and cut of 18m (see site plan).

SECTION 4 (15.45-17.00)
• Case Study 3: A SI factual report for a road project in hilly terrains will be given to participants for preparation of SI interpretative report. The following issues shall be elaborated & discussed:
1. Scope of SI adequate for cut & fill slope design with respect to bore hole depth, spacing, type & frequency of insitu / lab tests? What are the required/recommended design parameters? Any supplementary SI (BH/samples/insitu/lab tests) required? Basis?
